You bring wood substrates and photo copies ( not ink jet ) of images and a few thin hand made papers you love .

Encaustic is the art of painting with hot beeswax mixed with pigments and resin. The wax gives off a wonderful smell and a translucency like nothing else.
This class is good for the experienced and beginner.

Some of the things that will be covered are,
Types of wax and the ready made supplies out there.
We will use Enkaustikos wax.
Safety and ventilation concerns.
Collage, masking, transfers, incising, scraping.
Surface texture and found objects.
What substrates are best and simple ways to display.
Using oil paints or pigment oil sticks.
I will demo both uses of the heat gun and the propane torch.

The substrates you bring can be found at Spokane Art Supply and Creative Element.
They also have other Encaustic supplies you might like.
One substrate is from Ampersand with a white encaustic finish on it.
Any unfinished small flat board, any size will work for sample pieces and larger for a finished piece.
If you stay uniform in size you could display later in a grouping.

New painting area

I am lucky enough to have a wonderful life in the NW. I have found that with too much stimulus for the eye and brain it is very difficult to focus on what I'm feeling. I really enjoy the feelings of creation and art. When we were kids we would have fun wonderful ideas and everyone would say oh how cute , such an imagination. Now as an adult we have a full brain of all the daily things we need and have to do, called life. Sometimes we need a space just to be and let all our ideas flow, to relax , to meditate , just be.

Well I was able to make that space for my self, I painted walls, moved furniture and took down curtains. This space is open, uncluttered and lots of natural light. I love love love it. I put plastic on the floor and covered that with canvas so paint can spill and no damage only wonderful color. I covered the walls so I can write and throw paint at will. A very happy place,,no fear!!

These 3 paintings were older pieces I really didn't like. I needed to paint over them. They have wonderful texture and color popping through. I have done this several times and it is like setting something free.

What a Great Week-end !!!!!!

Teesha Moore came to Spokane and did a class at the Spokane Art Supply. We had a great fun group of ladies, some old friends and many new ones. She took us from a blank page to many full pages of art and words. We also did a 3-d wall hanging.. We glued, painted and had a general big mess of papers. It was fun to be a kid again cutting and pasting. Add some paint with your fingers and lots of words.

This one is not done , just a start.

For a week now all I want to do is paint out side. I have never thought of myself as a plein air painter. I now understand the feeling you get just by being out side. When we are in our work space we see all the distractions. Out side there is only what you are painting and feeling.

Thinking Spring is good for me.
One thing about being confined, you get to use the internet a lot. I found this wonderful artist . " Violette. She is a wonderful illustrator. She inspired me to put flowers coming out of my head. You just never know what is going on under all that hair.

Healing Part 2

Life is about learning and sharing. Family and friends and how they effect us.

With a broken femur/hip I have been confined to a small comfortable space to heal.
This has been a great opportunity to focus on the task at hand, my leg, but what can I do art wise with a small assortment of supplies.
I love love love to carve rubber and the printing process. Design to image to the finished piece.
We get our inspiration from life and the wonderful things we choose to have around us.
For some reason all I want to do is sunny bright, happy colors.

On the Mend

On Jan 26th I fell on some very hard ice and did some serious damage to my hip. I'm on the mend and everyday is better. I had to post pone most of my classes. In April I will know more as to how much I can plan.

Several artist's do a painting a day, this keeps them in practice and fresh. Well some of us just plain don't have the time to do that, although we would love to. Some wonderful friends and artists get together in a community center here , with a live model, to paint or draw, whatever we are happy doing. This is my project from yesterday. It still needs some work , but it is helping me to learn a little more each day.

I did some experimenting today. I just had to get my hands dirty. I have used printed napkins to years. I found these the other day and just could not resist the great colors. This could be a finished painting or paper ready to add to another piece of art.

Step 1 , find a pretty paper napkin.
Step 2 carve or make a one of a kind stamp.

Step 3 Stamp with contrasting color, using acrylic paint. I like to do this in layers of paint and different colors.

I can't wait to make more or to use this in a mixed media painting.

This week end is Art on the Green in Coeur d'Alene Idaho. I did this show for 20 yrs , It is hard to believe. I haven't been there for about 4 or 5 . It is amazing how much time it takes going into these shows, You are not just building your product - ART - but your booth , your display and many odds and ends. With the heat the way it has been you really need to think about extra shade along with ice and cold things to keep you from having heat stroke. All that aside I'm very excited to be going and to see my old friends and make some new ones. I will have my bird paintings, hand made Journals and cards. New for me is painted canvas art bags. I really love these girls and I hope others do also.

Art Walk at the Pend d'Oreille Winery was wonderful. Lots of people out and about. The Winery had great music and snacks. I was happy to visit with people and tell them all about my work. Harmony Yarn

Two more for Harmony Yarn , Red head yarn lady and the Queen of yarns. Both are done with a combination of methods, painting, mono printing, collage. They are 3 feet all and should fit well on the very tall walls with all the sweaters and knitted projects.

Fiber Arts are huge and wonderful. The owner Melody, says that men are a very big portion of her clients, this was a surprise to me. Hey good for them! For me knitting and crochet puts me in a very calm state, just plain feels good. All the color, all the touchy feely comfort, eye candy, a good place to be.

Harmony Yarn

Harmony Yarn, the best yarn store in Coeur d'Alene Id. has moved. They are in the Bear Paw Center across the Fred Meyer parking lot. My Friend Melody asked to make some wacky ladies for the store. She has moved into a new space and would like art for the 15+ foot ceilings. The walls are painted a beautiful periwinkle. This is the first of 4 Yarn people. This yarn lady is 5 ft tall. Melody also wants more of my art for showings and selling. I'm very excited to do this.

This was a wonderful workshop. Anne Bagby is a great teacher and very generous. She was so full of energy and everyone was so excited by color and pattern. It is going to take a while to absorb everything. I really enjoyed meeting all the ladies.

We made many many papers for back grounds and what ever. Many can stand alone as a painting. Here is a sample I'm working on for a full sized piece with a image for a local store.

Blanchard has the most wonderful Community Center ever. They have worked very hard to this going so everyone in this small north Idaho area has a place to meet and share. Look at all the cute little aprons hanging from the ceiling. On this day we had 2 painting classes going. Mine was large scale collage and the other was beginning portraits in oils. It was a great day with lots of sunshine.

I've been busy painting fabric. These pocket bags are for the Entree Gallery in Nordman Id.

I'm calling them Big City Art Bags. I wanted to make a piece of art to wear and use. I did really small pockets to put inside other bags. I also wanted a bag big enough to carry your journal and a few mark making supplies.

Artfest was WONDERFUL !

The first day it rained like crazy but we were in for great fun and sunshine. This is the view from my first classroom, can you see the little bird sitting on the roof?

I had 3 fantastic teachers. The first day was Keith Lo Bue and Papering over it.

It's all about the right glue This man has done his home work, good tips and lots

to work with.

The next day was with Mary Beth Shaw, she is such a ball of fire. Great Great

The next day was Misty Mawn WOW She is so sweet and a great teacher. I went to the class thinking it was just going to be collage. Oh silly me. Faces just what I love. She works fast !! Misty was well prepared as all of my teachers and she had great hand outs .

I'm getting very excited about going to Artfest in PortTownsend Wa. I have 3 great classes and I'm staying in a dorm with a lot of very happy Arty ladies. This is going to be fun. I went to this in 2005 and it was a blast. I learned a lot and had a great time.

I've been reading a bunch about painting on fabric and canvas. There are some great books out there I will post them next. Here is what I got out of it. I always like bags for art supplies. I love bags and containers, a girl can never have enough!!

Well winter has gotten to me again ! Every year I go through this. My work area is never big enough and I really want to be out in Sunshine so I clean up my work space. It is good therapy and I usually find things I have lost. Boy,, it really looks different this time.

Well I'm trying some new things, or I should say old things. I have painted on fabric for years. I used to do a line of clothing in my youth and stuffed painted fish mid way. Well now I'm trying it on fabric that has a base design to start then putting my take on it. This is a example to the right. I also scanned some of my favorite paper as a boarder. I'm working on updating my web site. There are so many cool sites out there. I just want to keep up and be fresh. I also went to a free backgrounds site for the cute little edge with flowers. You always need something new.

I have a goal and that is to keep the grey cell working. For me that means figuring out things on the computer with nothing at all to do with bookkeeping or any accounting stuff. So-- I use my art. I was asked to see more pictures of my work space. This is my down and dirty space. I paint there do metal work and mixed media. Ton's of chaos, but I work well that way. I have it divided into work area's. My space is long and narrow. I have a office at one end , with the dirtiest part at the farthest end. I put all the metal stuff in the dirtiest part with the jewelry stuff. I really would like more space to be painting, But it all works out. My biggest struggle is taking the time to do any form of art and

not feel guilty. As women, no matter what age you are, time is

always stretched. Necessary family responsibilities

As women we are vital to a happy home, this is a honor,but we

need to fulfill our needs in order to be the best for our family and

friends. I watch my daughter in her daily struggles, young children

and a very busy schedule. Sometimes just to squeeze out a

small space to create is a major chore, let alone the time.

I do know this when I was a young mother I had friends say,

but you are not doing your art???

My response was It will never leave me, I will have it when I need it.

You don't lose your life's blood.

A new year a new creative space

What inspires us to create?

Like most of many of us I grew up taking a home making class in Jr. high. We made aprons and pot holders. Boy at the time I didn't know how cool that would be today, sso many years later. I

learned to sew many of my own clothes. I even had to make my living as a seamstress. I have worked at a sporting goods company, with really heavy industrial machines to sewing fine lace in a designer boutique. I have quilted and sold them at craft fairs. Futons were in my life for years. I've even sewn men's wool hats. I can't count the years spent behind a sewing

machine. I reached a breaking point and said STOP!

I walked away from the machine!!

Well I'm back~~~~

at least for this winter.

I will ask again, what inspires us to create, color, feeling, desire?

Now the next question, how on earth do you find all that fabric you have been hording for years and what the blank do you do with it? How do you set it up to be able to use, to see, to let your mind wander??? A flat place to cut fabric. You have to make a space some where some how!!

The hallway becomes a sewing room/ exercise/ guest/ jack of all needs room. Oh the bathroom becomes the ironing room. This little space has been a studio ( before I got a real room to pound metal and burn a torch) My daughter and grandsons room. My husbands office. Whew a lot of tasks for a small room. We have to be inventive when the mood hits.

This is the long shot.

This is the way I feel when I'm here, light and bright, a little edgy and in my total girl space.

I know that I suffer with the blues when it comes to winter. I can't get out and dig in the dirt or just plain sit and have lunch out side in the sun. So this is my retreat from "work" I have a sunny window on the south side of the house and pretty bright colors around me. We all need to feed the creative parts.

I make art for a living and I'm so honored to be able to do it. But I still need a space to just do sweet fun things. If you have a hole in your heart, find a space, even if it is in the hall way to the bathroom, make it yours.

Well it has been a while,, I have some thoughts for the new year, one is to keep this blog just for Art Work and Updates on classes etc. I have seen a bunch of blogs turn into post that are a little personal. I think it is more fun to see each others art and encourage each other with our projects. That is my story and I'm sticking to it. I want to make it a goal to do some sort of art everyday !!! We have had so much snow and I truly believe doing some sort of creating EVERYDAY keeps a smile on our faces. I'm going over to Artfest in Port Townsend Wa. (in April). I'm going to take part in a couple of trades for books. One is ATC book the other is a Fat Book. The theme is Sea monsters. FUN

I have to adapt these to fabric for the fat book. This should be a lot of fun stitch stitch. You don't have to use Fabric but I saw one that was done in 05 and I just loved all the stitching. This is a good thing to do while unwinding in the evening.

Good Morning,, I listen to a pod cast called Craftcast. ( http://www.craftcast.com/ )It is all about making stuff. Anyway she interviewed an artist named Faythe Levine. Spokane Art Supply Great Art Adventure.
This was so much fun. I got to meet lots of new people. There were so many wonderful supplies to buy and drool over. I got a bunch of new rubber stamps from Lost-Coast Designs http://www.lost-coast-designs.com/, very cool. Debra from Rubber Moon Rubber Stamps was there also. http://rubbermoon.com/I taught a class using mixed media and eyelets, metal etc. Great Great. Pictures coming.

Fall Sailing

Sat and Sunday we did our Fall Regatta. Sat was a wonderful sunny day. We had to wait for the wind to show up, but when it did we all had a great time. We all got together after for a great feast of Creole food. Sunday was a different story, rain rain rain with good and crazy wind.

This is a piece I made from copper, carved cinnabar, and a clay scarab. I also put one of my paintings of a Raven in the center. When I made this I was just happy to make jewelry again. Now as the summer moves along it seems to be a symbol of past and present, life and death, hope and learning. When I make a piece I just let my heart and fingers do the work, I never know or plan for a piece to make some kind of statement, but it does happen. I have lost a dear Artist friend , I've gotten hugs from children and had a milestone birthday. The Raven holds many secrets, past, present and future.

This is a piece I did about 14 years ago, It is made of nickel and Gold. It has a hidden meaning and is worn as a pin.This is a piece I did yesterday. I put one of my Raven paintings in it. He has a really big beak. The ravens we have here are very noisy
For some reason I'm getting excited about Jewelry again. Who knows, sometimes you just have to be open for any thing.

I think most of the people that look at this is my family and friends. So you will understand about this. I am totally hooked on Podcasts!! I can get free downloads on all sorts of topics. Old radio mystery's are my favorites. My trouble is I want to keep all of them and listen over and over. All these casts fill up my computer, oh well. I love to listen to these. Cheers

I'm still here

Well I'm still here and stuck on Birds. I get so happy in the spring when I here the birds sing.

These two painting's are in the beginning stages. The song bird I haven't done anything to it yet. The Raven I put on a piece I had started as a Encaustic, It now has nails and wax with it. It is hard for me to leave any thing flat.

Well I've made a few changes.

This bird on the heading makes me think of going through a window from the dark to the light.

A friend was at my home a while back and made the comment that she liked my work but everything was so dark.

It has been a long winter and I'm ready for spring and summer. For me that means light and bright.

House Keeping

In our home we have a Pellet stove for heat. It is located in the middle of our living room. I have always disliked seeing the back of it as we walk in. I usually put a basket or something ther to try and disguise it. Well I finally broke down and I'm painting a screen to hide it. A friend gave me some huge silk screen panels. They are the perfect size. On the side that in next to the stove. (No heat, don't worry) I painted over some really cool fabric I had, only about 10" at the top will be seen .

On the front I wanted something that was fresh and made me feel like I was out side. I'm still working on it , so this is in progress.

Where I grew up, southern Calif., we had a large back yard. we divided it up with a white picket fence, my Mom hated it because she had to keep it painted. Behind the fence we had avocado and lemon trees and a fig tree for a while. I didn't know I lived in paradise. The beach was only 10 minutes away. Bird of Paradise grew everywhere. We had a big pepper tree, that my sister loved to climb. I made tents in the back yard . That never got out of my blood. I've spent years traveling to craft shows, setting up my tent on the lawn.

We have been busy!
